The R4.25-million Vodacom Durban July at Greyville, run on the first Saturday of July annually, is billed as Africa’s greatest horseracing event and with good cause. Some 50,000 people pack into the racecourse and there’s a loud cheer as the runners break from the starting stalls at the 2200m mark. They then race in a straight line until disappearing behind the Drill Hall at the 1600m mark. There they swing right into a long sweeping bend that turns sharply right into the short straight with 400m to go. The crowd begins to roar as the runners gallop across the subway and unwind into the final charge for the most coveted horseracing prize on the continent.
