  • History: International jockey competitions were pioneered in South Africa by former Gosforth Park chief executive Wally Segal. They were immensely popular in the 1970s and into the 80s before being discontinued because of the exchange rate and rising costs. The concept was re-introduced by Phumelela in 2008 on SANSUI Summer Cup Day when six riders were invited to South Africa to pit their skills against the six best local jockeys, who capitalised on home-ground advantage and won by a wide margin.

The Racing Association took over staging the Challenge in 2009 when it was held on a Friday night. Racing Association chief executive Larry Wainstein later expanded the Challenge to two race meetings in different racing centres and in 2013 to race meetings in all three major racing centres. It reverted to meetings at Turffontein and Kenilworth in 2014 and a year later went to Port Elizabeth for the first time with Leg 1 held at Fairview and Leg 2 at Turffontein. In 2017 the event was held only at Turffontein.

    Event Details:
From 2017 the jockeys will ride in six races restricted to 12 runners. There is a ballot for mounts in each of the Challenge races and runners are seeded beforehand in an attempt to ensure both teams have roughly the same calibre of rides overall. Points are awarded as follows: first – 30; second – 15; third – 12; fourth – 10; fifth – 8; sixth – 7; seventh - 6; eighth - 5; ninth - 4; 10th - 3; 11th - 0; 12th - 0. If a jockey does not ride in a race, he gets seven points. The team that scores the most points wins the Challenge and there awards for the top rider in each leg and the top rider overall.
